Umeå University has posted some general information on the following topics:
Picking up tests/exams
If you ave a question about your test, or if you think you deserve a few extra points, ask your teacher before picking it up.Student accommodation
The most common students area is Ålidhem — Majority of students stay in Ålidhem during their time in Umeå. It´s about a 10-15 minute walk to the university. There is a center (Ålidhem Centrum) that has 2 grocery stores (ICA and Coop), a hair salon, an electronics store, 3 restaurants, a fika (coffee/refreshments) shop, a convenience store, and a pharmacy/medicine store.Contacting the landlord beforehand
It´s important for you to contact your landlord in advance in order to arrange a time for you to pick up your keys, present contact information, or whatever else they may need for you to do. If you´re arriving during a time when the office isn´t open, you should make plans to stay at a hotel or hostel in town.Getting an internet connection
When you arrive in your student room, there will not be any internet. To order a subscription, plug in your computer to an Ethernet cable (consistent for all countries) and go to the site https://www.kommunicera.eu/
. Choose the plan that is right for you. In order to subscribe, you must have a student ID number, or Swedish personal number. You can obtain a student ID number as soon as you pay your dues for the student union. After filling out the forms for internet subscription, you should have internet in about 15-60 minutes.Setting up your mobile phone
When arriving to Umeå, you may already have an international phone. In that case, all you will need to do is buy a sim card. You will have the opportunity to choose from a few different service plans, though it is most common for students to use a service called Halebop. You can choose to have a yearly contract, or to just pay by month (this works best for students who are staying for a short time). It is also possible to buy phones here, if necessary. You can buy an international phone and/or sim card at almost any electronics shop: OnOff, Media Markt, Expert, Elgiganten, Telia or Phone House. Be sure to shop around first for the best deals. You can receive advertisements in your mailbox by having your name and nothing else. If you decide that you don´t want any advertisements, post “Ingen recklam, tack!"
Using laptops
Ethernet cables (internet cable) are the same in all countries. Remember that electrical outlets are not internationally consistent. You may need to buy a number of electrical converters, or purchase your electronics when you arrive, depending on where you come from.Having a TV
If you want to have a TV in your room, you will need to pay a tax. Every time you buy a TV from a company in Sweden, a company called Radiotjänst
will note this, and contact you to pay for the tax involved. Wait for them to contact you; you do not need to contact them. Or, it is very likely that your corridor will provide you and your corridor mates with a TV in the common area.Purchasing alcohol
It is possible to buy alcohol from grocery stores like ICA, Coop or Hemköp, but they only have alcoholic beverages with 3.5% alcohol or less, and there is not a large variety. If you want more options with higher alcohol percentages, you will need to visit Systembolaget. They have locations in Vasaplan (downtown), Ersboda, and Stömpilsplaten (next to ICA Maxi). You must be 20 years old to buy alcohol in Systembolaget, and 18 years old to buy from ICA/Coop/Hemköp. Drinking age at the bar depends on which bar you are going to. Make sure to bring your passport or EU identification card, as well as your student card. If you are going to Systembolaget with friends, make sure everyone entering is of correct age and has their passports with them. If not, you they should wait outside for you. You cannot buy alcohol at Systembolaget without your passport.Buying items for your home
To buy any household items that you need, you can choose to buy new or secondhand. There are secondhand stores at Vasaplan (downtown) and Ersboda, as well as online at www.blocket.se
or Umeå University student forums. Blocket.se is all in Swedish though, so it will help to have a Swedish friend close by to help you out. Buying new can be expensive, so it depends on your budget. Try stores in Vasaplan like Åhléns, Lagerhaus, or Clas Olsson. In Ersboda, try Jysk, Rusta, or Jula.Tax Office (Skatteverket)
For students staying longer than 1 year, it would be beneficial to register for a Swedish personal number. You can do this at Skatteverket, which is located just outside of Vasaplan.Health Issues
- Student Health Service is on campus and available for students who are feeling mentally or physically ill. They hold group therapy sessions for international students, and provide services such as studying consultations, light therapy, etc. Visit their homepage: http://www.umu.se/english/education/student-support/student-health-service

- Vårdcentral is a clinic that can be found in almost every major living area. It is a good idea to visit there when you arrive to fill out personal information forms.
